- Black Sea
- Inland sea whose strategic importance had to do with its close proximity to Constantinople (q.v.), which was fed by shipments of grain and salted fish coming from the Black Sea. The Byzantine colony at Cherson, in the Crimea (qq.v.), was the place where Byzantium (q.v.) endeavored to monitor northern peoples such as the Khazars, Pechenegs, and Rus (qq.v.).
